Launch of Egypt’s National Platform to Combat Human Trafficking

In Egypt, the Suzanne Mubarak Women’s International Peace Movement has been at the forefront of serious developments in the fight against human trafficking.

  In partnership with the Egyptian government, the Movement organized the “National Platform to Combat Human Trafficking” Conference on April 20th 2010.

This landmark event brought together over 500 leaders from the business community, the media and the civil society to cooperate in the development and implementation of a national action plan to combat human trafficking in line with the efforts of the Egyptian National Coordinating Committee against Human Trafficking. The UN Special Rapporteur on Combating Trafficking in Persons, Ms. Joy Ngozi Ezeilo also attended.

This national meeting came at a crucial time as Egypt issued the first comprehensive Egyptian law to combat human trafficking/law 64/2010 in May 2010.

 Prior to this high level meeting, preparatory workshops were organized by the Movement in collaboration with the Ministry of Family and Population and the National Coordinating committee to combat Trafficking in Person. One hundred and fifty representatives of the business community, local NGOs and media representatives attended the workshops. Each group developed recommendations and proposed activities so that they could work in a coordinated manner and agree on a common strategy for combating and suppressing Trafficking in Persons.
