Introduction
Young people of today represent a powerful catalyst for peace and development in our region. In addition to their intellectual contribution and their ability to mobilize support, their unique perspectives and creativity can truly help to energize these processes. Our mandate is to enhance this positive potential for change by providing the younger generation with the right tools and resources that will enable them to realize their visions and aspirations for a more prosperous region. This approach entails the need to build the skills and capacity of our youth to actively collaborate with adults in the implementation of peace and development goals. It calls for the creation of well-defined channels through which young people can voice their needs and promote their objectives, as well as a sustained effort to expand opportunities for them to participate fully in their societies. The initiative also requires a dedication to enlighten youth on their important role as peacemakers and their stake in the development of their nations. A crucial step in this direction is helping them to understand the value of turning a Culture of Peace into a Culture of Life by mainstreaming values such as justice, tolerance, cooperation and equality in the pattern of behavior, communication and perception of their societies. It means encouraging them to take advantage of the opportunities presented by globalization by building avenues of cooperation across communities and national boarders based on good will, trust and a respect for diversity. This new publication traces back sixty years of efforts conducted by the United Nations towards the enhancement of conditions conducive to sustainable peace. It provides a comprehensive record of UN materials highlighting the evolution of various resolutions, declarations and programmes that have significantly enriched the international agenda for peace and security. In the same vein, it offers insight into the thought process that has led to the formulation of a holistic vision for peace and the central role that women and youth can play in its realization.
I am confident that the existing partnership between
our Movement and the UNDP will go along way in building upon the
substantial work undertaken over the years in the fields of peace in the
Arab region. The next generation of leaders, facilitators and stakeholders
will emerge from among the current young population. The choices these
individuals make in the future will greatly depend on the choices which we
make for them today. Thus, we must spare no effort in setting the stage for
their achievements. In doing so, we will be laying down the foundations for
a peaceful future for generations to come. |
